Richard Mollet has written in the Farnham Herald about how the Budget demonstrates Labour's election theme of a Future Fair for All in action:
In his Budget this week, the Chancellor Alistair Darling set out the choice to the country at the General Election: Labour will work towards ensuring future growth and jobs, not throttle back on investment at the very time it is most needed, as the Conservatives would do. In short, Labour will secure the recovery, not put it at risk.
But most importantly of all Labour will achieve this through policies which are based on fairness. I believe that people in South West Surrey want a government which stands up for the many not the few. That’s why as we work towards recovery, the greatest burden will be carried by those with the broadest shoulders. Labour’s Deficit Reduction Plan means that 60% of the taxes are paid by the richest 5%, including the new top rate of tax on incomes over £150,000.
The Budget will also be good news for hard working families wanting to get on to the property ladder. The level at which Stamp Duty has to paid on a house purchase will be increased to £250,000 for first time buyers for the next two years. This will be paid for my making stamp duty higher for homes worth over a million pounds. This announcement came in the same week that the government announced it will change the financing rules to allow local authorities like Waverley to build more new council homes.
Labour’s theme for the coming general election is A Future Fair for All. This week’s Budget demonstrated exactly what that policy looks like in action.
Yours sincerely
