I have passionately believed in progressive politics all of my life and I have been a member of the Labour Party since 1992. Throughout my professional life, first as an officer in the Royal Navy and for the past eleven years in political communications, I have supported and campaigned for the Labour Party in whatever ways possible.
I was born and grew up in Swansea where I attended Olchfa Comprehensive school and then went on to Oxford University. I am married to an educational psychologist who currently works for Lambeth LEA. We have three young sons.
This background has given me a deep commitment to public services. I believe it is our party’s historic mission to ensure that everybody in our society has entitlement and access to healthcare, education and welfare; and that it is a government’s moral obligation to work to achieve full employment and social justice.
My Political Background
I have been an active member in a number of London constituencies. Most recently I worked with Sadiq Khan MP in his successful 2005 general election campaign in Tooting. I will be able to draw upon this experience in campaigning in South West Surrey.
Through my work in political communications I am immersed in the British political system and I have strong contacts with Labour MPs and Ministers and I am in regular correspondence with MPs, Peers and government officials. This knowledge of the political environment gives me vital insight into the issues and forces of national politics and also means I will be able to call upon contacts beyond the constituency.
Successful political campaigning is all about communications. I have extensive experience in addressing meetings of all sizes, from small policy seminars to conferences. Through my current work with the British record business I conduct regular interviews with broadcast and written media journalists and have media relations experience in promoting and rebutting potential coverage. Whether it is door-step canvassing, town-hall meetings, written articles or media appearances, I have the expertise to deliver an effective campaign for Labour in South West Surrey.
My Commitment to South West Surrey
I have known the area for many years and my family and I live in Chiddingfold in the heart of the constituency. As the Labour Party candidate I will:
· Run an active, positive and effective campaign, communicating the achievements of the past ten years of Labour government.
· Ensure that Labour voters in the constituency have a credible locally-based candidate.
· Work to keep the Labour Party nationally informed of and engaged with South West Surrey.
